Black Bean Curry/ Saaru Upkari

Long time back I bought some black bean from Safeway. I am not very sure what bean were those but it looked very much like "kali tori" we get in Mangalore. In Bangalore we used to buy these from Mangalore Stores. I prepared saaru upkari last week and the bean tasted exactly like "kali tori". Saaru is soup and upkari is stir fry in konkani. This dish can be served with rice and the bean can be eaten as a side dish or even with chapathi or dosa.

1/2 cup black bean/ kali tori
3 cups water
6-7 garlic pods
7-8 green chillies, slit 
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon oil

Soak beans for 5-6 hours or overnight.
Pressure cook it with three cups of water upto 3 whistles.
In a pot add slit green chillies, salt and sugar to cooked bean and bring the mixture to boil.
In a skillet heat oil and fry garlic pods for 4-5 minutes.
Pour it on bean gravy.
Serve hot with rice.

Preparation Time: 15 mins (exlcudes bean soaking and cooking time)
